Kefe

Kefe Privacy Policy

Kefe keeps your food log, weight and health data on your phone. There are no accounts, no servers of ours, no advertising and no tracking. This page explains exactly what is stored, the few things that leave your phone, and why. It covers Kefe for iPhone and Kefe for Android.

Who is responsible

Kefe is developed by Unsel Studio, a trading name of Unsel Consultancy Ltd, registered in England and Wales (company number 13117560). For any privacy question or request, contact support@unselstudio.app.

What stays on your device

Everything you enter is stored in the app’s own private storage on your iPhone or Android phone:

None of this is transmitted to us. We operate no server that could receive it and have no way to access it.

No accounts, no ads, no tracking

Kefe has no sign-up and asks for no e-mail address. It contains no advertising, no analytics, no advertising identifier and no third-party crash-reporting or tracking code, and it builds no profile of you.

Apple Health (iPhone)

If you allow it, Kefe reads your weight, body fat, steps and workouts from the Health app to work out how much you burn, and writes the calories, protein, carbs and fat you log. A copy of what it reads is kept on your device so your history works offline; it is stored separately and excluded from device backups. Health data is used only to provide Kefe’s features: never for advertising or marketing, never sold, and never written to iCloud by Kefe. You can change these permissions at any time in the Health app.

Health Connect (Android)

If you allow it, Kefe reads the following from Health Connect: weight, body fat, steps, exercise sessions and active calories burned, including up to 90 days of history so your weight trend and calibration have enough data (this history permission is asked for separately). If you also turn on writing, Kefe writes the calories, protein, carbs and fat you log as nutrition records, and reads nutrition records only to find and update the ones it wrote itself.

This data is used only to work out how much you burn and to show your own progress inside the app. A copy is kept on your phone in separate storage that is excluded from Android’s device backup. It is never sent to us or anyone else, never sold, never used for advertising, and never used to decide eligibility for credit, insurance or anything similar.

Kefe’s use and transfer of information received from Health Connect adheres to the Health Connect Permissions policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

You can change or withdraw these permissions at any time in Health Connect, or in Settings → Health Connect in the app.

Barcode lookups (Open Food Facts)

When you scan a barcode that is not already in your library, Kefe asks Open Food Facts for that product. The request contains the barcode number, the app’s language (so the product name can come back in it) and the app’s name and version, which Open Food Facts asks every app to send. It contains nothing from your profile or log, and no account or identifier of you. As with any internet request, Open Food Facts’ servers can see your device’s IP address. Open Food Facts is an independent non-profit database; its own privacy policy applies to the request it receives.

Camera

The camera is used only to read barcodes. On iPhone the image is processed by Apple’s VisionKit; on Android by the open-source ZXing library inside the app. In both cases this happens entirely on your phone, and the image is not stored or sent anywhere.

Notifications

The optional protein reminder is a local notification created on your phone. Kefe has no push server.

Backups

iPhone: if the iCloud library backup is on, your saved products, recipes, favourites, work types and appearance settings are stored in your own iCloud account through Apple’s key-value storage. Your food log, weight, profile and Health data are never written there. Your food log and manual entries are included in your iPhone’s normal device backup; data that came from the Health app is excluded.

Android: Kefe’s database (profile, food log, library and settings) and a small copy of the weights, workouts and steps you entered yourself are included in Android’s device backup to your own Google account, which you can turn off in your phone’s settings. Health Connect data is excluded. On Android 9 and later, Google encrypts this backup with your phone’s screen lock.

Encrypted backup files are created only when you ask for them, are protected with a password that Kefe does not keep, and go wherever you save them.

Purchases and the free trial

Kefe is free to download with a 21-day trial and a single one-time purchase. We never receive your name, payment card or billing details.

iPhone: the trial and the purchase are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. The app only receives Apple’s confirmation of the purchase, which it checks on your device.

Android: the purchase goes through Google Play. Kefe uses Google’s Play Billing Library, which communicates with Google Play to process and verify the purchase; Google handles that under its own privacy policy. The trial’s start date is stored only on your phone.

Files you export or share

CSV exports and encrypted backups are created only when you ask for them and go where you send them. Once shared they are outside the app’s control, and this policy no longer covers them.

Children

Kefe is intended for adults aged 18 and over. The app collects no personal data from anyone, including children.

Retention and deletion

Your data stays on your device until you delete it. Deleting the app removes everything Kefe stored on your phone. On iPhone, turning off the iCloud library backup removes that copy from iCloud; on Android, device backups are managed in your Google account. Entries written to Apple Health or Health Connect and files you exported are managed in those places.

Your rights (UK GDPR, GDPR, KVKK)

Because your data is stored only on your device and under your control, you can access, export, correct and delete it directly in the app. For questions or requests under data-protection law, write to support@unselstudio.app. You also have the right to complain to a data-protection authority: in the UK the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk), in Turkey the Personal Data Protection Authority (kvkk.gov.tr), or the authority where you live.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated as the app evolves. The current version is always published at this address with its “last updated” date.
