Kefe Help & Support

How Kefe works out your numbers, how the trial and backups work, and how to reach a human.

Getting in touch

Kefe is made by a small independent studio. Write to support@unselstudio.app and you will reach the developer directly. In the app, Settings → About → Support & Feedback opens an e-mail that already contains your app version, your iOS or Android version and your device model, which makes a fix far more likely. Nothing else about you is added.

How the daily budget is worked out

Your budget is what you burn in a day minus the deficit your goal needs. What you burn has four parts: a base (your resting metabolism from the Mifflin–St Jeor equation, times a multiplier for everyday movement), work, sport and walking. Work hours (minus your breaks) and workouts use MET values from the 2024 Compendium of Physical Activities; walking uses your steps, without the steps you took during work or a workout so they are not counted twice.

The budget never drops below a safe floor. If a goal needs a pace faster than 1% of your body weight a week (0.5% when gaining), the goal screen warns you and offers a safer date or target.

Calibration

Formulas are an average; your body is not. Once a week Kefe compares the change in your weight trend with what you logged over the last 28 days and nudges the base multiplier towards what your body actually did. It needs at least 14 complete days and weigh-ins on at least 8 different days, and the multiplier stays between 1.0 and 1.4. You can switch calibration off, or reset it, in Settings → Profile.

Connecting Apple Health or Health Connect

iPhone: Kefe can read your weight, body fat, steps and workouts from the Health app, and write the calories, protein, carbs and fat you log. Apple Watch, smart scales and fitness apps reach Kefe through Health when they are set to write to it, so no separate connection is needed.

Android: Kefe uses Health Connect in the same way. It reads weight, body fat, steps, workouts and active calories, including up to 90 days of history, and can write the calories, protein, carbs and fat you log. Watches, scales and fitness apps that write to Health Connect reach Kefe through it.

If the same workout arrives from two apps, only one of them counts towards calories; choose which in Settings → Health (Health Connect on Android).

A barcode was not found

Product data comes from Open Food Facts, a free database built by volunteers. If a product is missing or incomplete, Kefe opens the manual form with the barcode filled in; what you save there stays in your own library and is used the next time you scan it.

The 21-day trial

Kefe is a one-time purchase with no subscription. After setup you can start a free 21-day trial, during which everything is open. When it ends, Kefe becomes read-only: you can still see everything you logged, export it and use Settings, but adding and editing are locked until you buy the full version. Your data is never held hostage.

On iPhone the trial is tied to your Apple Account, so deleting and reinstalling the app does not restart it. On Android, Google Play does not offer free trials for one-time purchases, so the trial’s start date is kept on your phone and comes back with Android’s device backup.

Restoring a purchase

iPhone: on a new iPhone, or after reinstalling, open Settings → Restore Purchases.

Android: Kefe checks your purchase with Google Play each time it opens, using the Google account the app was installed with. Settings → Purchase → Restore purchases checks again.

Purchases made on the App Store cannot be moved to Google Play, or the other way round.

Backups and moving to a new phone

iPhone: your food log stays on your iPhone and is part of the phone’s normal backup. Your library (saved products, recipes, work types) and appearance settings can also be kept in iCloud; turn this on or off in Settings → Backup & Export. Data that came from the Health app is never written to iCloud by Kefe; it is read from Health again on the new phone.

Android: your profile, food log, library, settings and the weights and workouts you entered yourself are included in Android’s device backup to your Google account, and come back when you set up a new phone. Health Connect data is not included; it is read again on the new phone.

For a complete copy you control, on either phone, create an encrypted backup: a single file protected by a password you choose, saved wherever you like. A backup made on an iPhone opens on Android, and the other way round. Restore it from the same screen, or from Restore from backup on the welcome screen of a new phone. Kefe does not store the password. If you forget it, the backup cannot be opened.

Exporting to a spreadsheet

Settings → Backup & Export → Export log as CSV creates two files: your food log and your weight measurements. Export stays available even after the trial ends.

Deleting your data

Delete an entry by swiping it. Deleting the app removes everything Kefe stored on your phone. Entries Kefe wrote to Apple Health or Health Connect, encrypted backup files and exports are separate, so remove those yourself. On iPhone, turn off the iCloud library backup first if you want that copy removed too; on Android, device backups are managed in your Google account.
